Personal Ads: Theodor Seuss Geisel
Maybe you knew him as Dr. Seuss. Maybe you knew him as Theo LeSieg. Or even Rosetta Stone. But however you knew him, you loved him.
Theodor was born in 1904, in Massachusetts. He wrote for a humour magazine whilst at Dartmouth but was forced to resign after he got busted drinking gin in his dorm room. {We really WOULD have been best friends!} Afterward, he continued writing under the pen name “Seuss” and post-graduation…Dr. Seuss.
After college, TSG was a busy boy. He submitted funny pictures and prose to publications like Life and Vanity Fair. He even supported himself and his wife through the great depression by drawing advertising for General Electric and NBC. During WWII he was doing political cartoons for a New York City newspaper. But his post-war books {1950s} are truly his masterpieces. The Cat in the Hat…Green Eggs and Ham…and what about How the Grinch Stole Christmas?!
Sadly, he died of throat cancer in 1991. You can visit the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden in his birthplace of Springfield. And you can maintain his immortality by reading all of his wonderful stories to future generations.
